Liverpool’s hopes of sealing a summer deal for Bayer Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam have suffered a blow, with the Bundesliga side ready to offer him a new contract.
The German international has recently been linked with a January move to Anfield following a succession of impressive displays this term.
Brendan Rodgers is thought to be keen to add to his options in the final third to build on an impressive start to the season, and has been alerted by Sam.
The Northern Irishman was hopeful of beating a number of other interested parties to the 25-year-old due to the Merseysiders’ relationship with manager Sami Hyypia – a former Kop hero.
But, the ex-Finnish international defender has hinted that his star wide-man may be offered a new deal in the not too distant future to put an end to speculation.
“I do not do contracts, but the club known my opinion,” Hyypia told talkSPORT.
“A player like Sid is important for the whole future of the club. If we keep our strong players, we are also attractive for new good players.”
Liverpool have also been linked with Sorting Lisbon’s Diego Capel, with young winger Raheem Sterling thought to be set to leave the club on loan
