Liverpool have opened talks with Benfica over winger Nicolas Gaitan, according to Metro.
The 26-year-old was set to join Monaco last week after agreeing personal terms, but the clubs were unable to agree on a fee.
And Liverpool are now hoping to bring him to Anfield, and confident of nabbing him for less than his £35.6million release clause.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have all shown their interest in the player this summer but are yet to make an official bid.
Despite Liverpool being unwilling to meet his release clause, it is unlikely that Benfica will accept anything lower than £30m, although Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted he will pay big money for the right player.
Gaitan was voted in the Europa League Team of the Year last season.
