According to reports in local Newcastle paper The Shields Gazette, Liverpool are looking to sign Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles.

What's the word?

Lascelles is having a mighty season at the heart of the Newcastle defence and that form is attracting attention from the Premier League.

The Shields Gazette reports that Liverpool have been sending scouts to watch the 23 year old and will do so again in the coming weeks, with a potential January transfer move in the offing.

The paper reckons Newcastle are unlikely to entertain bids for the defender, who has excelled for the Magpies this season in the Championship.

Good enough for Liverpool?

The young centre-back has been a massive presence in the Newcastle team this season and is setting the example to follow in order for the club to return to the Premiership at the first time of asking.

Benitez's side are top of the league, 6 points ahead of 3rd place, and automatic promotion seems to be a the most likely outcome at the end of the season.

Lamaal has helped his side to a massive 10 clean sheets already this season. His strength and other physical attributes has allowed him to excel in a tough league and he's well placed to play Premier League football again.

Whether that's with Liverpool or Newcastle remains to be seen but we're not surprised the likes of Klopp are reportedly interested.

Having conceded a massive 20 league goals this season, it makes sense that Liverpool are in the market for new talent in the heart of their defence.
