Liverpool are now favourites to land Benfica attacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, according to BBC Sport.

Manchester City and Manchester United were reportedly keeping tabs on the Argentine 26-year-old, but it is now believed the Reds are in poll position to prise him to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool’s interest in Gaitan has come a surprise given the strength behind their midfield and attacking line but, with Champions League football to think about next season, Rodgers needs to put together a large squad in order to be fully prepared.

Gaitain joined Benfica in 2010 for around £4million and has since made 175 appearances in all competitions, scoring 25 goals.

But it is his creativity that could be attracting Liverpool the most, with the midfielder assisting an impressive 10 goals this season alone.
