Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to lure out-of-favour Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand to Anfield, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The English defender is currently some way down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, and has even been overlooked in favour of Cesar Azpilicueta – a right-sided defender – during Ashley Cole’s absence from first-team action.

Rodgers has been monitoring the situation, and is ready to launch a winter move for the 24-year-old in a bid to solve his own defensive issues.

The Northern Irishman is currently fielding youngster Jon Flanagan out of position on the left-hand side of his backline die to Jose Enrique’s injury problems, and although the Merseyside-born player is performing well, he is keen to snap up a more orthodox option.

Rodgers completed, arguably, the deal of the window last January by snapping up Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea, with the striker who was frequently benched in West London having developed into one of England’s brightest attacking talents with the Reds.

The Liverpool boss is hopeful that Bertrand could mirror the impact of his former team-mate, and is confident that he can persuade Mourinho to sell – even though the two clubs are in direct competition for the title this season.
