Jose Enrique’s injury woes and the erratic form of on-loan Frenchman Aly Cissokho have highlighted the Merseysiders’ lack of options in the position, which has forced young right-sided defender Jon Flanagan to cover in recent weeks.
Although the academy graduate and fans’ favourite has been impressive, Rodgers is keen to snap up an orthodox and established player for next season, and has highlighted Schmelzer as a candidate.
The 26-year-old is seen by the Northern Irishman as the sort of player who can slot straight into his starting XI and help the Reds to cope with the demands of Champions League football next term.
Schmelzer – who starred in Dortmund’s run to the final of Europe’s top club competition last season – is believed to be valued at around £10m and has been linked with top clubs such as Real Madrid in the past.
The full-back was included in Germany’s most recent squad and is likely to make their World Cup selection later this year.
