Liverpool to abandon Lallana chase in favour of Benfica ace

Liverpool are ready to scrap their move for Adam Lallana and turn their attention to Benfica starlet Lazar Markovic, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Southampton captain has been the Reds’ top target for some time, but despite negotiations between the clubs having been rumbling away in recent weeks a deal appears to be some way off.

Liverpool’s latest offer of £25m is believed to be of a ‘take it or leave it’ nature, but that has not caused the South Coast club to drop their £30m asking price.

With 25% of any fee due to go to Bournemouth thanks to a clause in the agreement that took him to St Mary’s Stadium as a youngster, Southampton want a larger fee for their man.

But with a breakthrough some way off, Brendan Rodgers wants an answer soon or he will make Markovic his priority.

The Northern Irishman has been chasing the talented Serbia international for some time, but was initially put off by Benfica’s £30m demands.

However they are rumoured to now be willing to accept closer to £20m, and Rodgers is worried that if he doesn’t move this summer he’ll miss his chance to nab the versatile attacker.

Markovic is six years younger than Lallana, which is seen as a positive by the Merseysiders.
