Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race for £43m Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, according to reports from El Murcurio.

The Chile international has been heavily linked with a switch to Louis van Gaal’s Red Devils in recent months, with the Dutchman said to have made him his major target ahead of the new season.

But despite their interest, Vidal appears to be no closer to a transfer to Old Trafford than he was when the World Cup ended, which has alerted Liverpool.

The Reds are understood to be tracking the 27-year-old, despite their big spending to land names such as Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Emre Can.

With Luis Suarez having been sold for around £75m, the Merseysiders have the cash for a ‘marquee’ signing and Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that money could be spent on the right player.

Vidal is rumoured to fit the bill, with the Juve star one of the world’s very best box-to-box midfielders.

However, Liverpool would have to compete with the £200,000-per-week salary United are said to be ready to offer him, which would make the South American the highest earner at Anfield by some distance.

One trump card the Kop side have over their bitter rivals in Champions League football.
