Benfica have told Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers that Lazar Markovic will cost £30m this summer, according to reports from the Sunday People.

The Reds have recently emerged as rivals to Chelsea in the race for the highly-rated Serbian, who has been earning rave reviews for his performances for the Lisbon giants this term both domestically and in the Europa League.

Rodgers is believed to be looking at the 20-year-old as he prepares to provide Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling with cover and competition ahead of a Champions League campaign next term.

Representatives from the Anfielders are understood to have held discussions with Markovic’s agent already, but Benfica are holding out for a huge fee to let their attacking star leave.

Chelsea have long been linked with the versatile forward, with some reports suggesting that a deal between the clubs had already been agreed – although it’s understood that this is not the case.

Liverpool are confident that they can land Markovic, yet they may be unwilling to pay the figure the Portuguese side are demanding.

The Eastern European attacker can operate from either flank, and has been lauded for his ability to drift into central areas and link with his strikers – which is a characteristic Rodgers values of his wide players.
