The 18-year-old has been linked with a host of European sides as well as a transfer to the Premier League, after impressing in Sweden’s Allsvenskan.
Should Liverpool make a move for the defender, who currently plays for Djurgarden IF, Amartey would join Mamadou Sakho, Tiago Ilori, Aly Cissokho and Kolo Toure in Liverpool’s defensive recruits for this season. But Djurgarden chief scout Khaled El-Ahmad refused to confirm which clubs were interested in signing the youngster:
“I do not comment on individual clubs’ interest, but the player in question is one of Allsvenskan’s talents and is only 18 years old. It had been misconduct by the big leagues not to follow him.” said El-Ahmad.
Amartey has helped Djurgarden to currently lie 7th in the Allsvenskan, 9 points adrift of third place, which is Sweden’s last allocated Europa League place.
The Reds have had a strong start to the Premier League season, battling with Arsenal and Chelsea for the top spot in the league table. But manager Brendan Rodgers is still open to strengthening his defensive options, as he looks to build a side capable of claiming a top 4 finish and a place in next season’s Champions League.
Does Rodgers need to boost his defence even more? Or should he focus on his midfield?
