For the best part of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool career, he’s been linked to former employee Ashley Williams, having worked closely with the Swansea skipper during their two campaigns together at the Liberty Stadium, achieving promotion to the Premier League in the process.
The Swans haven’t been in the best of form this year and resultantly, neither has the 29 year-old. But Williams personifies the Brendan Rodgers philosophy; he’s strong and fast, yet confident and cultured on the ball, this term averaging 59 passes per match.
Admittedly, this boat may have sailed, considering Rodgers invested over £20million in youthful centre-back pair Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori last summer.
But the Wales international is now a seasoned campaigner, having captained Swansea to two comfortable Premier League finishes and the first League Cup title in their history in 2013, and with rumours that Daniel Agger could be departing from Merseyside this summer, Williams has the experience to fill the void.
Furthermore, there will be no better opportunity to snap up the 45-cap Wales defender than the coming transfer window. There’s just a year left on his current contract at the Liberty, and with Napoli already circling a new deal seems unlikely.
Liverpool will have to stave off interest from the Italians, but the tabloids believe Rodgers’ long-term target could be available for as little as £5million.
