Liverpool are flying high at the top of the Premier League, as is their £34million summer signing Sadio Mane.

The former Southampton man was the star of the show as the Reds thrashed a hapless Watford 6-1 at the weekend, scoring two goals and running the Hornets' defence ragged all afternoon.

Many questioned the huge price tag Liverpool paid for the Senegal international, but with six goals and two assists in his new colours already this year, he is proving to be worth every penny.

Somewhat of a rags-to-riches success story already, having started his youth career Senegalese football academy Académie Génération Foot, Mane is going from strength to strength - flourishing under Jurgen Klopp and alongside Liverpool stars Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.

BBC Pundit Garth Crooks went as far to say that, given his current form and continual improvement, the former Salzburg forward could go on to emulate the great Luis Suarez at Anfield.

Now while we will reserve judgement on that for now, it is quite a compliment nevertheless.

Here are 10 things you may not know about Liverpool's man of the moment...

Big Money

Drogba1

At the time of signing for Liverpool, Mane became the world's most expensive African player ever with his price tag of £34million. That is more expensive than Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Samuel Eto'o, leaving him some expensive boots to fill.

Birthday Boys

Mane shares his birthday, April 10th, with Liverpool's record appearance holder and club legend Ian Callaghan. The pair were born exactly 50 years apart. Coincidence? Of course it is, but it's worth a mention nevertheless.

Lucky Escape

Earlier in the year, the former Southampton forward was unfortunately subject to a blazing house fire at his home in the southern Senegalese city of Sedhiou. While his family escaped mostly unscathed, reports said that the footballer's personal belongings were left 'in tatters'.

Travelling to the capital city of Senegal, Dakar, at the age of 15, Mane admitted he showed up for trials in torn boots and ragged shorts before being asked if he 'was in the wrong place?'. The trial was the start of his career as his ability shone and he was selected instantly for the academy at Académie Generation Foot.

Three's a Crowd

SALIF DIAO

Mane is the third Senegalese to represent Liverpool in the club's history, after Salif Diao and chronic-spitter El Hadji Diouf - both of whom were signed by former manager Gerard Houiller following the 2002 World Cup.

Not alone

Robert Pires

Having began his professional career in France with FC Metz, Mane joined a club with a track record of producing proven Premier League players. Rigobert Song, Emmanuel Adebayor, Papiss Cisse and even Robert Pires also began their careers with the Ligue 1 side.

Lucky Charm

Or not in the case of Liverpool before Mane's move to Anfield. The forward had a certain affinity for scoring against the Reds, netting four times against them in the past two seasons for Southampton. That's one way to earn yourself a move.

Record Breaker

Mane owns the impressive statistic of scoring the fastest ever Premier League hat-trick. Of course you remember it, who wouldn't?! It took him only 176 seconds to bag three goals against Aston Villa last season, breaking the record previously held by none other than Robbie Fowler. How is that for efficiency?
