Paris Saint-German star Edinson Cavani says that his Uruguay team-mate Luis Suarez is “happy to stay” at Liverpool following the club’s transformation into title contenders.

The controversial striker looked to be on his way out of Anfield over the summer after publicly chasing a move.

He claimed that a lack of European action and media treatment were major factors in his decision, after a difficult period with the Reds.

However Brendan Rodgers’ side held firm to keep him, and Suarez has become the focal point of the club’s impressive attack, which has fired them into the battle for the Premier League title.

Cavani – a friend and team-mate at international level of the Kop idol – says that he is a changed man now, and that he is much happier at Liverpool than he was this time last year:

"I speak with Luis most weeks - and he is loving life at Liverpool," he is quoted by The Express.

"When I speak with him now it sounds like a different man to that of last season. You can hear it in his voice how happy he is compared to last season.

"He has always loved Liverpool - things have not always gone well for him in England - and he told me how humbled he was by the way the club and the fans stood by him."

Cavani also went on to hint that Suarez may elect to stay at Liverpool beyond the summer:

"When he asked to leave people thought there was an ulterior motive like a financial one - but it was not true.

"All he wanted was to be at a team which matched his ambition, where he could play Champions League football, and where he can compete for major trophies.

"Now Liverpool are in that place he is happy to stay."
