The Belgian defender, currently in with his national side in Brazil for the World Cup, has reportedly agreed a deal in principle to join the Old Trafford outfit after this summer’s tournament.
The deal, thought to be worth around £10million, will see the 28-year-old put pen-to-paper on a bumper £100,000-per-week deal, which is a significant rise from his current £70,000-per-week deal at the Emirates.
The move looks set to damage the relationship between the Gunners fans and manager Arsene Wenger further, with many frustrated with the way several of the club’s star players have been sold on to Premier League rivals in recent years.
And the decision not to resign former captain Cesc Fabregas, paving the way for the Spaniard to complete a £27million move to London rivals Chelsea, has also angered Arsenal fans.
If Vermaelen does complete his switch to Old Trafford, he will be the second key player to leave for Manchester already this summer, with Bacary Sagna turning down a contract extension to sign for Champions Manchester City.
