With Martin Demichelis seeing red in the first leg of Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Barcelona, Manuel Pellegrini had little choice but to field Joleon Lescott in tonight’s match at the Nou Camp.
I know what you’re thinking – the swanky, world-class, virtually-unstoppable-at-full-throttle Lionel Messi could eat up the slow and sturdy Premier League veteran for breakfast. It’s a hell of a mismatch, and provoked some hilarious responses on Twitter:
Bit of money for Messi to score a hat-trick at 12/1, following the news that Lescott starts.

Jolean Lescott up against Messi is gonna be like watching Mike Tyson vs my nan — Barry Scott (@leighsargey) March 12, 2014
I wonder if Neymar and Messi have ever heard of Joleon Lescott. Probably not. — Gareth Maguire (@gazzamaguire) March 12, 2014
Sticking to his English roots, the Manchester City centre-back approached the situation the only way he knew how… fouling Messi as often as he could in the hope he’d get away with it:
Hahaha full on penalty not given. Messi completely chopped down by Lescott

Lescott has already got away with 2 challenges on Messi. The 2nd should have been a penalty. Lucky boy

As you can see from this picture, it was quite clearly a penalty:
