Manchester City look set to open their chequebook again this January, with a few players needed to ensure Pep Guardiola's revolution at the Etihad Stadium continues.

City spent over £150m during the summer transfer window, but they still look enormously vulnerable at the back.

Guardiola has recently allowed defenders Pablo Maffeo and Angelino depart the club on loan to join FC Girona, and along with the long-term knee injury suffered by holding midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, the Spaniard's resources have depleted.

But who should he buy?

The persistent injuries Vincent Kompany suffers from and the increasing age of all of the team’s full-backs has left the Citizens in a sticky spot, and spending in the winter window is now a must for any chance of Premier League success.

Guardiola has shown during his short stint at City that he doesn't stand for any nonsense, but now he must put his money where his mouth is.

Here are FIVE players Guardiola should target in January.

Fabinho - AS Monaco

In the European game, there are few more versatile players than AS Monaco's Fabinho, and the 23-year-old Brazil international has become the symbol of Leonardo Jardim's inspiring side.

City are in desperate need of a full-back, and Fabinho shone for the Principality club when playing on the right side of the defence last season before being moved into a box-to-box midfield role.

Guardiola could work wonders with someone of Fabinho's athleticism and ability.

Jose Gaya - Valencia

Since bursting onto the scene at the Mestalla in 2014, Gaya has impressed despite Los Che's woes.

He is still only 21-years-old and with his ability to both attack and defend with equal quality, surely Guardiola must be sniffing around the youngster.

City's left-backs continue to be a cause for concern, with Gael Clichy's contract at the club expiring in July.

Mahmoud Dahoud - Borussia Monchengladbach

As City are preparing for life without Yaya Toure, Guardiola must look to German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach for a replacement for the inspirational Ivorian.

Syrian-born German midfielder Dahoud has the potential to go a long way in the game, and has impressed every time City have played the German outfit over the past two seasons.

Still only 20, Guardiola should must steal a march on any potential suitors sniffing around the young midfielder.

Virgil Van Dijk - Southampton

It's difficult to remember a top-quality side suffering as much in defensive situations as Manchester City have recently.

All campaign the club have looked shaky in defence, but Virgil van Dijk could solve the recurring issue for Guardiola's side.

Likely to cost upwards of £40m, City have the money and are in need of a commanding centre-back.

Steven N'Zonzi - Sevilla

According to The Sun, Pep Guardiola is weighing up a £25m move for former Stoke City, and now Sevilla, midfielder Steven N'Zonzi.

The Frenchman is not the same player that he was in England and has become one of the finest midfielders in La Liga during his time at the Andalusian outfit.

N'Zonzi would replace the injured Ilkay Gundogan and ensure Fernandinho isn't relied upon, which would be a boost given his inability to remain on the field of play for a full 90 minutes of late.
