Manchester City have had a quiet summer by their standards, yet to match up to the impressive acquisitions made by rival title contenders next season.

But with Financial Fair Play hanging over head, there is very much a need to move on those can be deemed surplus to requirements at the club. Problematically, however, the club will also need to keep an eye on their homegrown quota next season.

Manuel Pellegrini has had an extremely positive start to life in English football, lifting two trophies last season. But the Chilean will want to further mould the squad at Manchester City into one that he feels can compete on all four fronts.

With that in mind, these are five players the club should sell this summer...

Micah Richards

Micah Richards

Following the signing of Bacary Sagna on a free transfer from Arsenal, and the continued links to a number of centre-backs around Europe, there is simply no need for Micah Richards at Manchester City beyond this summer.

Richards has already felt the sting of heightened transfer activity from the club over the past few years, going from a regular in the team to obscurity, well away from regular match-day squads.

But Richards’ versatility has made him a target for a host of Premier League clubs, some even competing in Europe next season. With nothing left for him at Manchester City, now is the time to take advantage of whatever interest there may be from other clubs.

Jack Rodwell

Jack Rodwell (Manchester City)

Hope hasn’t been completely lost with Jack Rodwell, with plenty of teams in the Premier League interested in the midfielder’s services.

But it’s clear that the interest is based solely on what Rodwell produced while at Everton, with very little to show for his time at Manchester City. A move to his former club has been suggested, where he would certainly see more game time under Roberto Martinez.

With City linked with Ross Barkley in the event Yaya Toure’s agent convinces him to move on, there will never be a gap for Rodwell to move up the ladder at the Etihad. This summer should finally be the point where he moves on from City for good.

Scott Sinclair

Sinclair

Scott Sinclair made a terrible career move by choosing to join Manchester City in 2012 from Swansea. Previously on the books at Chelsea, the winger moved to Swansea and helped the Welsh club win promotion to the Premier League, where he had a good season under Brendan Rodgers.

But Sinclair has rarely featured for City over the past two seasons, and now is the time for the 25-year-old to move on. He went on loan to West Brom last January but failed to regain his form. The best option for him now is to restart his career and forget the disappointments of the past two seasons.

John Guidetti

Guidetti

It feels a long time since John Guidetti had that 20-goal season for Feyenoord, but now at 22, it’s finally time the Swedish forward cut ties with Manchester City.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Stoke but failed to make an impression. It may simply be that his future lies away from English football.

He’s still young at 22, and while there is very little to take from him in recent years, that season spent in Rotterdam should see him to a decent team in Europe.

Javi Garcia

MF - Javi Garcia

Javi Garcia was another one of the disappointments signed during the summer of 2012, immediately after Manchester City had secured the Premier League title. The former Benfica midfielder didn’t meet expectations, and while he hasn’t always performed terribly, he failed to offer much that could justify his signing from the Portuguese side.

This summer, Garcia has moved further down the pecking order following the arrival of Fernando from Porto. Garcia’s versatility to move into the centre of defence will become surplus as well, with Manuel Pellegrini targeting a starting centre-back this summer.
