Joe Hart says that Manchester City have only themselves to blame following their European exit.

The Sky Blues slipped to a 1-0 Champions League defeat at the hands of Dortmund, meaning they have finished bottom of Group D after six games and failed to take a place in the Europa League.

Their return of just three points is the lowest total ever registered by an English team in the competition, and Hart conceded that the performances of the squad have been below par:

"We have let ourselves down. We need to be winning," he told SkySports.

"I think Borussia and Real Madrid have done fantastic but we should be fighting till the last day to be in the competition and we weren't.

"We should have been in their position and we weren't.

“We've only got ourselves to blame.

However, the stopper believes that the team’s solid domestic form will allow them another shot at Europe’s top prizes next season:

"We've been disappointing in Europe but we've been fantastic in the league and consistent.

"So I don't think there are any worries about that but we need to address it to get in that Champions League again.

“Hopefully we can win the league then we'll be able to deal with it next year."

Julian Schieber scored the only goal of the game as he diverted Jakub Blaszczykowski’s cross into the City net.
