Northumbria Police will look into accusations that Manchester City defender Aleksander Kolarov racially abused fans during the win at Newcastle on Saturday, the Mirror are reporting.

Serbian international Kolarov reportedly used racist language after becoming  involved in an exchange with supporters carrying an Albanian flag as he warmed up in front of the Milburn Stand at St James' Park during the 3-1 victory, although it's not yet clear what was said by the 27-year-old.

There is a history of hostility between the two Balkan states, with tensions already fraught due to majority-Albanian Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008, although its believed the altercation arose over the 1990s Kosovan conflict.

City plan to interview the one fan that filed a complaint with Police with the force said to be taking the incident very seriously and are continuing with their inquiries.

“Northumbria Police has received a report of alleged racist language having been used at St James’ Park during the Newcastle-Manchester City match,” said police.

“Northumbria Police take such allegations extremely seriously and enquiries are ongoing into the incident."

Kolarov came on as a substitute for Samir Nasri in the first half but had to withdraw due to injury 18 minutes from time and travelled back to Manchester with his teammates later that evening.

Its understood that he will face police questioning next week, while neither Newcastle or City chose to comment on the incident after the final whistle, insisting that they would let the police handle the situation.
