Manchester City are considering an ambitious £25m move for Everton’s midfield starlet Ross Barkley, according to reports from The Mirror.

The midfield dynamo emerged as one of the Premier League’s top young players last term, with his bombarding displays in the Toffees’ engine room earning him a spot in England’s World Cup squad.

Despite the disappointment the Three Lions endured in Brazil, the 20-year-old escaped the tournament with his reputation boosted after some impressive cameo outings from the bench.

This appears to have convinced City to launch a move, as they plot to boost their home-grown quota.

The Sky Blues are dangerously low on English talent, and will see their numbers drop in the coming weeks with Gareth Barry, Micah Richards, Joleon Lescott Scott Sinclair and even James Milner set to leave.

Manuel Pellegrini may even sanction a swoop that would see Jack Rodwell head in the opposite direction, with the 23-year-old having failed to impress at the Etihad Stadium after leaving Everton in 2012.

Barkley himself has been urged to stay at Goodison Park by a number of club icons, and follow their advice to keep his fledgling career on track.
