His combative and consistent performances have led to rumoured interested from his former side and Manchester United, but Manuel Pellegrini is thought to be ready to mount a serious move in a few days’ time.
Despite having strength in depth throughout his squad, the Chilean has revealed that he is looking at making additions next month:
“For the moment we are not talking about that [the transfer window]. But we are always analysing what we need and what we don’t need.
“There is a possibility in the winter transfer window for every club. We will see what we are going to do in the next days.”
City may pursue a straight cash deal, or could look to reduce Matic’s valuation by offering Javi Garcia – who used to play for Benfica – in exchange.
The player himself has expressed a willingness to return to English football in the past, despite having endured a frustrating spell at Chelsea.
