It is thought that City are searching for a replacement for Mario Balotelli whose training ground bust-up with manager Roberto Mancini, allied with some poor performances, has damaged his reputation with the club’s hierarchy.
Cavani is seen as the ideal alternative and it is thought that sporting director Txiki Begiristain has made an approach.
It’s said that the offer made is in the region of £45m, which may prove tempting for the Naples-based club.
Although Napoli are keen to hold onto their star man the 25-year-old has previously stated his willingness to play in England:
“I know that there has been interest from Premier League teams. I know I would be a success in the Premier League – and it is an exciting prospect.”
Cavani has hit 20 goals already this season, attracting the attention of a number of top clubs.
If City are to complete a deal it is thought that a number of fringe players may have to be moved on in order to reduce the club’s vast wage bill.
Balotelli, a larger earner, has been heavily linked with AC Milan of late, who could pounce with the player’s future appearing uncertain.
