Manchester City face a trip to Borussia Monchengladbach on matchday five of the Champions League Group Stages knowing that a draw in Germany should be enough to take them through to the knockout rounds.

The only way it wouldn’t is if Celtic beat Barcelona at home and then defeat City at the Etihad Stadium in a fortnight’s time.

However, as we all know, Pep Guardiola is a winner and he certainly won’t settle for a point against the Bundesliga outfit, well aware all three will guarantee his side's progression to the last 16 and give them a chance of securing top spot in Group C above his former club.

City beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium on matchday four on a brilliant night for the Premier League outfit, with a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and a Kevin De Bruyne goal giving them a famous win that moved them closer to qualification.

Here is Football FanCast’s Man City XI to beat Gladbach…

DEFENCE

GK: Claudio Bravo

Claudio Bravo

Following his red card in the Camp Nou on matchday three, Bravo missed out on the home win against Barcelona last time out, but it seems as though Guardiola's number one will be back between the sticks in place of Willy Caballero for the trip to Germany.

LB: Gael Clichy

clichy

Guardiola opted to play Aleksandar Kolarov in the left-back position in the previous Champions League encounter at home to Barcelona, but with City likely to play a possession game and hit Monchengladbach on the break at times, the more pacey Clichy could be preferred to Kolarov.

CB: John Stones

John Stones and Pep Guardiola

With Vincent Kompany set to be ruled out for a number of weeks after suffering a knee injury against Crystal Palace at the weekend, Guardiola pretty much has his hand forced when it comes to picking his starting centre-backs, with little cover for Stones and Otamendi.

As we mentioned above, unless Aleksandar Kolarov is deployed at centre-back as he has been on occasion this season, then Otamendi and Stones are almost certainties to line up alongside each other at the heart of the City defence for the trip to Germany.

RB: Bacary Sagna

Again, Guardiola preferred the more defensive-minded Pablo Zabaleta at right-back against Barcelona last time out, but with more emphasis likely to be on the attack in this clash, he could be dropped in favour of Sagna, who has proved that he can be a threat going forward.

MIDFIELD

DM: Fernandinho

Fernandinho Guardiola Instructions

With all of the attacking midfield options available, Guardiola will need someone to sit deep and break up the play and the City manager is likely to go with the Brazilian to help the defence against the Monchengladback attack.

De Bruyne has assisted seven goals in the Premier League this season and as well as being a crucial playmaker in this Manchester City side, he is a goal threat as well, as he showed with a strike in the 3-1 win against Barcelona.

The Belgian has to start every City match right now.

CM: David Silva

The Spaniard shows no signs of losing his class as he gets older and he has once again been a key part of the City side this term, albeit in a slightly different role in midfield.

Silva has the touch and passing ability to make the difference in Germany, and he could be key to unlocking the Monchengladbach defence as Guardiola searches for the three points.

CM: Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan

The Germany international scored twice in the famous 3-1 win against Barcelona last time out, and he is quickly establishing himself as a key part of the City side in Europe.

Returning to his native country, Gundogan will look to repeat the heroics he produced against the Catalan giants.

RM: Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling

Sterling has looked like a new man under Guardiola this season and the England international could play a key role in Monchengladbach, especially if City have opportunities on the counter attack.

His pace and attacking anticipation make him a shoo-in for a spot in the starting XI.

ATTACK

ST: Sergio Aguero

Aguero was surprisingly rested for the trip to Barcelona on matchday three in the Champions League, but Guardiola will surely have his main striker up top in Germany - especially after the Argentine attacker got a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture at the Etihad Stadium in September.
