The 21-year-old – capped four times at under-21 level for Austria – has been a permanent fixture in the Red Bull Salzburg defence since making his debut in 2010.
The youngster’s impressive form has attracted plenty of interest from across Europe, with Italian giants Juventus also thought to be monitoring the situation, according to Hinteregger himself.
“I confirm, there is interest in me from Manchester United and a top Italian club,” Hinteregger told TuttoJuve.com.
“I am honoured, I honestly did not expect that.
“Actually my goal is to stay here, but in any case I will talk to my agent and consider whether a transfer might be beneficial.”
Arsene Wenger was thought to have identified Hinteregger as a potential January signing, with the Gunners boss keen to bolster his centre back options.
Last week reports suggested Liverpool were ready to battle for his signature, although this appears more unlikely considering the Reds signed three centre backs in the summer in the form of Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori.
Meanwhile David Moyes is under pressure to spend big in January following United’s poor start to the season, and lack of summer transfer business.
Moyes was only able to bring in Maraoune Fellaini during the summer, and his United side have picked up just seven points from a possible 18 this season – suffering three defeats already.
