Since first making a household name for himself in Serie A with title favourites Juventus, 21-year-old Paul Pogba has been on the end of constant praise throughout Europe, as well as being the subject of a seemingly never-ending transfer saga linking the French international with a move back to Old Trafford.

The current Juve no. 6 may have initially excited the bosses at Manchester United during Ferguson’s reign, but an apparent dispute over contract negotiations eventually ended Pogba’s spell with the Red Devils and saw the young talent become a star with Juventus.

Now in the wake of Louis van Gaal’s pricy spending practices in the summer, United are reported to be big contenders in the race to land Pogba if he doesn’t sign a contract extension in Italy. In light of such developments, would the silky midfield enforcer fit straight back into his old stomping ground surroundings, or would he struggle to compete with the whole host of other high-profile names at Old Trafford?

Pogba’s brief career at United sees him go down in the club’s folklore as ‘the one who got away.’ Watching back the Frenchman’s constant supply of screamers from Serie A must be a tough ask for fans of the Red Devils, even if they already have players capable of similar feats in their current squad. Pogba’s confidence is on another level compared to most of his European counterparts however.

The fiery Frenchman has a distinctly composed nature on the ball. He seems to have everyone under his spell as he dances through the opposition and unleashes great shot after great shot at unsuspecting goalkeepers. Yes – Pogba certainly remains a raw talent and is not without a few aspects of his game that could do with a good polish, but as his form at both the domestic level and international scene show, there is still a great deal to come from this promising starlet.

While Pogba’s future at Juventus is far from clear, Manchester United are reportedly still in the running to land the Juventus star should the opportunity present itself. Depending on how willing his current employers are to cash in on the talent, the Frenchman is likely to cost his former side one hell of a transfer fee, something the Daily Mail are reporting could be upwards of £80million.

Whether or not such reports are wide of the mark, a question still remains as to what role Pogba would play in Louis van Gaal’s current set-up should he eventually make the switch. The Red Devils already have the likes of Wayne Rooney, Angel Di Maria and Juan Mata at their disposal, and if the ex-Manchester United starlet did in-fact join those already bolstered ranks, what would that mean for the newly acquired Ander Herrera, who signed from Spain in the summer?

As United’s defence is also in need of a good strengthen, does van Gaal really need Paul Pogba right now? If Manchester United were to back out, the void would seemingly be filled by either Chelsea, Manchester City or Barcelona, who remain other strong contenders to land the highly valued Frenchman.

Ultimately then, wherever the next chapter lies for Pogba, expect the young star to continue his rapid progress on his rise to the top, and to remain a household name for many years to come, whether he is or isn’t back in Manchester.
