Alexander Buttner has aimed a sly dig at Manchester United by claiming that he’s joining Dynamo Kiev to play in the Champions League and fight for silverware.

The Dutch left-back completed his move to the Ukrainian giants yesterday, bringing an an end what has been a thoroughly disappointing two years at Old Trafford.

Buttner was brought in from Vitesse Arnhem to challenge Patrice Evra for a starting berth, but even with the French veteran’s form having been underwhelming the 25-year-old was unable to take advantage of the situation.

Despite new boss Louis van Gaal hailing from the same country as the defender, he was rumoured to have seen his chances of action as even lower with Luke Shaw edging towards a mega money move to the Theatre of Dreams from Southampton.

With an undisclosed fee having been settled Dynamo, Buttner says that he’s leaving United to challenge for honours and play at the highest level following the Red Devils’ failure to book a spot in the Champions League:

“I want to play in the Champions League and win trophies. Dynamo are building a very strong team,” he is quoted by BBC Sport.

“I am sure that we will be good enough to try to win the league title this season.”
