Holland hero Ronald de Boer believes that Louis van Gaal has made the correct decision to name Wayne Rooney his new Manchester United captain ahead of Robin van Persie.
With Nemanja Vidic having left Old Trafford on a free transfer over the summer, one of the major tasks of the summer for David Moyes’ successor was to choose his skipper for the coming campaign.
Given LVG and van Persie’s fruitful relationship from their international exploits, many had suggested that the Dutch forward would be given the nod, but it became apparent earlier this week that Rooney will wear the armband.
Although he has had issues with his temper throughout his career, ‘Wazza’ was seen by many as the obvious choice given his status at the club, and de Boer believes that van Gaal has made the right call:
“Rooney has been at the club longer and he’s English, which is important.” he told talkSPORT.
“I think, wherever possible, an English player should be captain of a Premier League team and I hear Rooney has looked impressive.”
Rooney signed for United in 2004 and has since made over 300 appearances in the iconic red shirt.
