The Red Devils’ woeful campaign came to a head yesterday as David Moyes was sacked after just 10 months in charge at Old Trafford following a disastrous campaign.
The weekend loss to Everton – the latest in a long line of limp showings – finally confirmed that United will not be in next season’s Champions League, prompting the Glazer family to call time on the Scot’s reign.
As well as this, the current Premier League champions have been relatively poor in Europe this term and suffered eliminations in both domestic cup competitions in a silverware-free time.
But Sharpe – who won the league title three times with United – feels that his old side can recover from the disappointment and get back to their best after the summer:
“I think they can challenge for trophies again next season,” he told talkSPORT.
“Some of the players there just need a bit of a fresh approach to kick start the season next year
“They’ve obviously still got some great quality players and I think with the right signings and the right manager coming in I don’t see any reason why they can’t be challenging for the league again next year.”
