Spain may have let their grip on the international scene slip at last summer's World Cup but home to both the Europa League and Champions League winners for a second consecutive season, there's no doubting the quality of La Liga.

Likewise, the Spanish top flight has produced countless Premier League stars over the last five years such Arsenal's Santi Cazorla, Manchester City's David Silva and Manchester United's Juan Mata, simply because there's almost too much top drawer talent for Barcelona and Real Madrid to cherry pick from.

So although the summer transfer window may now be closed, a number of La Liga stars are still on the transfer radars of the Premier League's top clubs.

With that in mind, here's a list of five players from the Spanish top flight reportedly in Manchester United's transfer crosshairs. Will a few of these five turn up at Old Trafford within the next few transfer windows?

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI

Manchester United's desperation to sign a star-studded centre-half has reportedly turned their attentions towards Valencia's prodigious defender Shkodran Mustafi - formerly of Everton.

The 23-year-old managed just one competitive appearance for the Toffees but has emerged as one of European football's most exciting defensive prospects since leaving Goodison Park for Sampdoria in 2012.

He was a part of Germany's World Cup-winning squad last summer and helped Valencia claim the third-best defensive record in La Liga last term after Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. This season, he's averaged an impressive 1.5 tackles, 3.8 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 3.2 successful aerial duels per match.

talkSPORT are of the opinion that the Red Devils have been targeting the eight-cap international for some time but now face competition from Bayern Munich and potentially Real Madrid.

They also report a £37million release clause - but believe Los Che might be tempted to sell for around £15million less.

RAPHAEL VARANE

Another La Liga defensive prodigy known to be in Manchester United's transfer thinking is Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane, with club president Florentino Perez recently confirming the club's summer interest in the France international.

The 22-year-old seems like the total defensive package, with a fantastic reading of the game, composure in possession and strength and speed in abundance, and has already achieved a great deal for a player so young - namely captaining the French national team and winning a Champions League final.

Jose Mourinho once described him as 'the best young defender in the world' and we're yet to see a genuine rival to that unofficial title here at Football Fancast.

Consequentially, Real Madrid aren't too interested in selling - so it all boils down to the issue of game-time. Varane's spent the majority of his Bernabeu career stuck behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the pecking order, who were both handed lucrative contract extensions this summer.

He's started six of a possible seven La Liga outings this season, but if the 6 foot 2 centre-half finds himself third-choice yet again, he may push for a move at the end of the season.

NEYMAR

Arguably the most exciting Manchester United transfer story to emerge since the close of the summer window, the Red Devils are reportedly targeting Barcelona star Neymar.

No doubt, the winger-forward is one of the top talents in world-football, having already won a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble, claimed the Puskas award, captained Brazil and netted 240 career goals at just 23 years of age.

United reportedly want to make the 67-cap international their new flagship entity - a status that will always be out of his reach at Barcelona with Lionel Messi still around.

The Premier League champions were prepared to activate his £130million release clause during the summer, according to Sky Sports, and are widely expected to maintain their interest across the next few transfer windows.

Barcelona, however, are hell-bent on ensuring the 5 foot 9 attacker extends his Nou Camp contract past 2018.

Antoine Griezmann

Easily La Liga's brightest talent outside of the El Clasico, pretty much every major club in Europe - including the Red Devils - is keeping one eye on Antoine Griezmann.

Indeed, the France international served as a goalscoring wide man at Real Sociedad, bagging 52 goals in 201 appearances amid their meteoric rise from the Spanish second tier to the Champions League, but has proved himself equally adept as an out-and-out centre-forward since moving to Vincente Calderon last summer, going on to net 30 times in 59 appearances across all competitions.

Famed for his industry, penetrative pace and defensive contribution, the 24 year-old seems like a natural fit for Premier League football. He was linked with the Red Devils in August after they missed out on Pedro and will undoubtedly remain in their transfer thoughts.

Griezmann signed a new contract in the summer and increased his release clause to €80million, however, so an Old Trafford move is still probably some way off.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Whether it's fact or fantasy remains to be seen but according to the tabloids at least, Manchester United are only becoming more interested in re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo - with a £92.5million bid allegedly in the pipeline.

Needless to say, the Portugal international is one of the greatest footballers of all time - only comparable in his current generation to Lionel Messi - as a three-time Ballon d'Or winner, two-time Champions League winner and most recently, Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer.

That latter achievement could well be the end of Ronado's Los Blanco's career, however. There's few challenges left for him to conquer at the Bernabeu and by next summer he'll be 31 years of age with two seasons left on his contract. It could be the right time for all parties to move on.

The tabloids believe Manchester United would love to sign their former star once again, even if it requires a ridiculous fee. But Football Fancast's money is on a move to PSG; they have the finance, the need for a new talisman and represent and untested challenge for CR7.
