Mourinho's tenure at United started very positively.

The Red Devils defeated Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield, winning 2-1 at Wembley.

They followed this up with three consecutive victories in the Premier League before being halted by arch rivals, Manchester City.

Unfortunately for the Reds, it wasn't just a blip as they followed that defeat up with a loss at Feyenoord in the Europa league before losing to Watford last weekend in the league.

That makes it three consecutive defeats for a Mourinho side for the first time since 2002.

Considering he was supposedly planning for the United job many months ago, such a drop in form and results will be worrying the new Portuguese manager.

They are already six points off the league leaders and need to arrest their slide as soon as possible.

In order to do that we at the Football FanCast headquarters believe that Mourinho must do these five things:

Drop Rooney

Rooney

The Red Devils may have stopped the rot by defeating Northampton Town in the EFL Cup but the result did little to dispel the doubters, particularly those of Wayne Rooney.

The United captain has been slated on socual media non-stop and is the main source of frustration.

It would appear that he brings very little to the table and is constantly misplacing passes and looking off the pace.

Whilst we don't think Mourinho should treat the United legend like he has with Bastian Schweinsteiger, we certainly think it's worth dropping him and seeing how the team can cope without him.

Settle on his midfielders

Pogba Fellaini

Manchester United have been fiddling with their midfield triumvirate all season. They haven't settled and therefore haven't been able to gel properly.

A few of them have impressed whilst the majority have simply flattered to deceive.

Most notably of course, Paul Pogba. The world record transfer fee has heaped tonnes of pressure on Pogba's shoulders and as of yet, he's failed to deliver.

However, we think Mourinho ought to settle on his side, and try and get Pogba used to the same players playing around him week in and week out.

Give the players confidence, don't knock them...

Luke Shaw

This United side have been slated for having no backbone and no fight. These are attributes that are strongly associated with Jose Mourinho and he will want his players to show their fight 90 minutes of every single match.

However, he has been prone to individually or collectively slating a few of them in the media and if this group is slightly brittle or weak, it would be helpful to try and pick them up instead.

He used to tell the Chelsea players that everyone was ought to beat them. He ought to do the same with this United lot and see who can deal with the pressure, Then praise...

Get the team entertaining

Zlatan

One of the crucial factors behind disappointing Old Trafford exits of Louis van Gaal and David Moyes was the fact that the football was not only dull, but also reaped little reward.

Apart from one FA Cup in the last few years, United won nothing.

However, to a lot of United fans, the performance and history of the United style is all important so if Mourinho doesn't get that, he looks set for a tough time.

Appease the hierarchy

Ferguson Woodward

It is no secret that Sir Bobby Charlton was not the biggest Mourinho fan.

He did not want him to manage his beloved Manchester United but eventually the decision was taken that the Portuguese would step into the famous dugout.

In order to warm his way into the heart of his doubters and those people in power at Old Trafford, Mourinho should think about appeasing those who have a say in his future.
