Manchester United have been forced to look elsewhere for a centre-half after Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp ruled out the sale of Mats Hummels.
Reports emerged yesterday that United had had a £16million offer accepted for the German World Cup winner.
But Klopp has denied any truth in the reports and insists Hummels will be staying at Dortmund this summer.
Speaking at a sponsor’s event yesterday, he said: “You know it’s garbage.
“Hummels will stay at Dortmund.”
Klopps comments will be a huge blow to Louis Van Gaal’s plans to rebuild his Man United defence following the summer departures of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand.
And now he could be forced to step up his efforts to sign Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
