Borussia Dortmund are interested in potentially re-signing Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, according to BBC Sport.

What's the word?

Manager Jose Mourinho recently publicly criticised the Armenian's form, which has resulted in the player being dropped from the squad against Newcastle United and Champions League opponents Basel.

Mkhitaryan returned to the setup for Saturday's 1-0 win over Brighton, but he had to settle for a spot on the bench.

BBC Sport claims that Dortmund, who sold the attacking player to United in the summer of 2016, would be interested in bringing the 28-year-old back to the club.

Mkhitaryan has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season so far, scoring two goals and creating five assists.

In his last seven outings for the Red Devils, the former Shakhtar Donetsk player has failed to find the back of the net or create an assist.

Should Mkhitaryan leave?

Mourinho has no qualms about axing a player if needs be, and if the attacker continues failing to live up to the manager's standards, then he could be left out in the cold for a while.

The player has shown the right attitude in the past as he managed to fight his way back into contention for the second half of the season.

At one point, Mkhitaryan had not started a Premier League game for close to three months, but that was his first season at Old Trafford.

If he becomes an outcast again, he may look to move on when the transfer window opens at the end of the season.

Dortmund could be a safe option as they have regularly welcomed back previous players, including Shinji Kagawa and Mario Gotze.
