Louis van Gaal has called on Memphis Depay to spurn interest from Tottenham and wait for a big move to Manchester United next year, according to reports from Goal.

The PSV Eindhoven winger is one European football’s most highly-rated young players and starred for Holland at the World Cup, netting two goals as they finished third.

United and Spurs have both been linked with the 20-year-old, with rumours indicating that the latter are ready to trigger his £18m valuation to get him to England before the new season starts.

Although van Gaal is interested in the player he coached until a few weeks ago with the Oranje, he is thought to be keen to delay a deal for another 12 months to let him push on and improve his all-round game.

As a result he is understood to have spoken to Depay and urged him to stay at PSV for the time being and wait for a major switch to United.

The starlet may well follow his advice, with his first team opportunities in Holland much greater.

Real Madrid are also watching the situation.
