Manchester United ace Ander Herrera believes that star goalkeeper David de Gea has a higher chance of staying at the club if they win the FA Cup next month.

De Gea was selected in the PFA Team of the Year for the second consecutive campaign recently, and was once again the hero for the Red Devils in their 2-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Everton on Sunday, saving a penalty from Romelu Lukaku in the first half.

However, after last summer’s transfer saga with Real Madrid, the Spain international is widely expected to leave at the end of the campaign, especially if the club do not finish in the top four this season.

But Herrera is confident that De Gea will be happy at Old Trafford if they manage to win the FA Cup against Crystal Palace next month, especially with Real now turning their attentions to Chelsea No.1 Thibaut Courtois in recent weeks.

“I think he is very happy at Manchester United,” he is quoted by the Telegraph. “You can see that. If you are not happy in one place, you cannot play like that.

“We can be calm and optimistic, first because he is in a fantastic club and if we start winning trophies, it’s easier to keep world class players.

“He is the number one in the world. In England, you know that, but in the rest of the world they think they have better goalkeepers, but I don’t think so. When we win trophies I think he will be more recognised. He has a special talent.

“When you are born with that quality and ability, you are so lucky. The rest of us humans – we have to work more. But what I like about him is he is very calm, he has his feet on the ground and he doesn’t change.”

De Gea, 25, has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, keeping 18 clean sheets.
