The Red Devils have endured a woeful 2013/14 campaign, with new manager David Moyes having struggled to follow on from the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Wednesday’s Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich all but announced the end of United’s season, with the Old Trafford side already out of the title race and unlikely to be able to mount a serious push for a top four finish.
But despite his side being a whopping 17 points off of leaders Liverpool, Fletcher believes that with a few good signings they will be back in the hunt to regain their crown in 12 months’ time:
“Next year we won’t just think about getting in to the Champions League, we will think about winning the league and getting into Europe that way,” he is quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“The gap is not as big as people think. We have some fantastic players. There will be some signings too and hopefully they can take us to where we want to be.”
United look to be in line to secure qualification for the much-maligned Europa League, and Fletcher says that the club will take the competition seriously:
“We should embrace it,
“Let’s go and win it.”
