The Portugal international has been heavily linked with the Red Devils across the past few months, with David Moyes believed to have had him scouted extensively ahead of the coming window.
Now it is understood that a deal will go through before the World Cup, with United having settled a fee with Sporting and sealed a five-year contract with the 22-year-old.
Carvalho is seen as the ideal man to inject some physicality and dynamism into United’s midfield, with their manager having grown frustrated with a lack of energy in his engine room during his debut campaign.
The likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Monaco have all also been linked with the enforcer, but United’s desire to get a deal done quickly appears to have won the battle.
Carvalho is unlikely to be the only big money arrival at Old Trafford, with Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos a top target.
Moyes is rumoured to be willing to offer the same fee as is said to have captured the Sporting man for the silky playmaker and offer him wages in excess of £200,000-per-week.
