Manchester United look set to end their interest in Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, according to the Manchester Evening News.
New Old Trafford boss Louis Van Gaal is still keen to sign the England international, but is refusing to pay over the odds.
A deal thought to be worth £34million was reportedly close to being completed, but it now appears Southampton have scared United off by upping their asking price to a huge £40m.
The Red Devils are desperate to bring in an understudy to Patrice Evra at Old Trafford, despite the Frenchaman signing a one-year extension on his contract at the end of last season.
But Southampton’s decision to ask for more presumably on the back of Shaw’s impressive involvement in England’s 0-0 draw with Costa Rica.
United have already lost Alex Buttner this summer, following his switch to Dynamo Moscow, and Louis Van Gaal may now have to look elsewhere for a replacement.
