What a complete and utter shambles.

The summer's biggest and longest running transfer saga has ended in devastating circumstances.

David De Gea's move to Real Madrid fell through last night because the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time, with the transfer deadline in Spain passing at midnight last night.

It means the Spain international will remain at Old Trafford until January at the very least, and could mean he'll have to remain on the sidelines until then as Louis Van Gaal potentially opts to stick with newbie Romero.

It has been revealed this morning that Real Madrid will not appeal for the transfer to go through after Spain's deadline, which means poor ol' De Gea will stay in England.

United were hoping to secure the services of Real stopper Keylor Navas as part of the deal, but that's obviously fallen through as well.

Two unhappy clubs. Two unhappy goalkeepers. Thousands of unhappy fans. Oh and a handful of happy fans, too...
