Manchester United have been left feeling “betrayed” by Sergio Ramos, with the lengthy transfer saga looking set to end with the defender signing a new contract at Real Madrid, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Red Devils appeared to be on course to snap up the 29-year-old until crunch weekend talks between the Spaniard and Los Blancos’ president, Florentino Perez, cooled speculation.

United have already had a £32m offer rejected, and it was understood that Ramos had his sights set on a switch to join Louis van Gaal’s side.

However, he’s now edging towards committing himself to a new contract at Real, and a source told the Daily Star that the Old Trafford giants feel that they’ve been used by the player:

“The club was led to believe he wanted to join them and was willing to leave Real Madrid.

“He was urged to make his feelings public to help speed up the transfer, but it now looks like he was playing a game all along.

“In the end it appears all he wanted was a new contract at Real and it looks like he’s going to get one as well.

“It’s not the sort of behaviour you’d expect from a player of his standing in the game. It’s like he’s betrayed United.”

The development may have a knock on effect on David de Gea’s proposed switch to Real, with United having previously insisted that Ramos was made part of any agreement.

However, the addition of Sergio Romero suggests that the club are plotting for life without their current No.1.
