Former Manchester United centre-back Paul McGrath believes that Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar would be an ideal signing for Louis van Gaal.

The Dutch defender starred for his nation at the World Cup under the guidance of the new Red Devils chief, turning in a number of impressive displays as the Oranje secured third spot in Brazil.

One of van Gaal’s major tasks before the start of the new season will be bulk out his backline, with experienced duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand having both left Old Trafford on free transfers.

A number of stars have been linked with moves in to replace the pair, but McGrath feels that Vlaar would be a great addition:

“Man United’s defence is an area which could do with strengthening,” he told talkSPORT. “They have lost Vidic, Ferdinand and probably Evra.

“With Luke Shaw coming in, it’s going to be a very young and inexperienced defence. I’m hoping he’ll bring in a good experienced defender. Ron Vlaar would be on that list.”

Vlaar move to Villa in 2012 from Feyenoord, and has earned a reputation as a solid and reliable Premier League defender in the Midlands.

McGrath played more and won more with Villa than any other club. Why twist his words and status? Shoddy click bait.
