Manchester United have made landing Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman their number one target for the coming months, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Red Devils are set for a massive summer of transfer activity, with new boss Louis van Gaal keen to overhaul is inherited squad when he jets to Old Trafford after seeing out his time as Holland’s coach at the World Cup.

The experienced former Bayern Munich coach is thought to have made adding steel to his midfield a priority, and has long been linked with Strootman.

However a deal looked to be impossible given the Roma’s reluctance to entertain selling their 2013 signing.

Yet reports now indicate that the Serie A giants’ stance has swayed, with the chance to make a profit on their man now appealing.

A fee of £28m – £12m more than they paid PSV Eindhoven – will be required, but van Gaal may be willing to splash such a sum to get a player that he knows well through the door.

LVG was set to make Strootman a key cog in his Oranje side for the World Cup before injury prevented him from doing so, but his plans could well be transferred to United.

A move may indicate the end of Marouane Fellaini’s woeful Red Devils career.
