Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes that his old club need at least four top quality signings to compete at the top end of the Premier League.
The Red Devils suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of Swansea in the opening clash on Saturday, which was new chief Louis van Gaal’s first competitive game in the hot seat
With injuries playing their part, the Dutchman deployed an unorthodox starting XI, with Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard making their full debuts – the latter was used out of position as a wing-back.
After the game LVG hinted at more signings to add to the arrivals of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, and Meulensteen – who left the club during David Moyes’ reign – feels that at least four high quality additions are needed before the transfer window closes:
“This is not going to be a quick fix. They have still got two weeks to go in this transfer window.” He told talkSPORT.
“They definitely need to maximise the opportunities in this window and probably in January as well.”
He continued: “We need to strengthen at the back, we need to strengthen in midfield and that is foremost the two areas they need to look at.
“In my opinion, they need to bring in at least four top players to really crank up the level.”
