Manchester United’s surprise home defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday saw the Baggies inflict a third-straight reverse for the Red Devils, a run of games that has seen them fail to score and has acted as somewhat of a reality check after their previous succession of results.

And while dominating possession once more, their failure to find the net has only raised further questions about the summer ahead, and how much Louis van Gaal will need to spend in order to turn his side into title contenders.

One player who could well be involved in a move away from Old Trafford, however, during the forthcoming transfer window is Adnan Januzaj. Recent reports have linked him with Everton who are keen to secure the winger on a season-long loan deal, something that United should be more than happy to give the green light to.

The Belgian star shot to fame under David Moyes, with big things expected of the midfielder after he struck twice in a 2-1 win at Sunderland back in October 2013 on his first league start.

But despite only being 20-years-old, his failure to feature more prominently in the first-team under Van Gaal will come as a cause for concern and he may well feel a loan move could prove beneficial in a bid to become a United regular.

A regular for the under 21s, Januzaj has featured just 20 times for the senior squad this season, mainly from the bench, starting just eight games for the Dutchman.

It’s clear the club rate him highly, but with the likes of Juan Mata, Ashley Young, and Angel Di Maria all ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s difficult to see him gaining a sustained run of first-team football anytime soon, which at this age is crucial in his development and could have a big bearing on his career.

Should United get themselves over the line and qualify for the Champions League, the extra games will certainly require a greater use of squad rotation from the manager and could lead to more playing time for Januzaj who is no doubt a useful player to have around.

However with new arrivals expected, including Memphis Depay who has been heavily linked with a move from PSV, this could leave Januzaj at the back of the queue once again, which makes a move to Everton look like an even better decision.

The Toffees would be an ideal place for the youngster to kick start his career, with Roberto Martinez sure to give him the chance he deserves should he arrive at Goodison Park.

He only needs to look at his Belgian teammate Romelu Lukaku to see just how much he could benefit from a season on Merseyside, and it will certainly give him the necessary platform to showcase his talent on a more regular basis.

A successful loan spell will not only benefit the player himself, but the club will also prosper from any deal with Everton. Should he kick-on and put in plenty of good performances they will have an improved player for their team come the following season, and having gained the vital experience he could finally become a first-team regular. But on the other hand if they feel he would be better off elsewhere, a season with Everton could help his stock rise; increasing his value and ensuring United can sell him for much more than they would this summer.

Whatever the future holds for Januzaj at Old Trafford remains to be seen, but it would certainly be a shame to see him leave the club without getting a fair crack at first-team football. The impending loan move to Goodison Park looks like a win-win situation for all parties involved, and particularly for the player who could use it as a platform to finally get the break he desires.
