Manchester United are ready to launch a £29m move for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, even though Jurgen Klopp has ruled out selling the defender, according to The Express.

The German centre-back – who helped his nation to win the World Cup earlier this summer – is rumoured to be Louis van Gaal’s top target to bolster his backline after missing out on Thomas Vermaelen.

With only Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to call upon as experienced options in his new back three set-up, the Dutchman is ready to spend £29m to nab Hummels, with rumours having suggested that numerous bids have been made through the current window.

Dortmund manager Klopp has recently claimed that the enforcer is “going nowhere”, but United are hopeful that such a big offer will tempt the Bundesliga side, who are well stocked for centre-backs.

Hummels is considered to be one of the world’s best players in his position, and has been lauded for his reading of the game and ball-playing abilities.

The Red Devils are short on cover at the back, with veteran duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic having left on free transfers to join QPR and Inter Milan respectively.

Should have offered big money from the start. We need quality at the back.

Hummels would perhaps make the difference in CL qualification but we will need 4 or 5 quality players and the whole squad to gel before we can seriously challenge for the league title. City and Chelsea’s squads are far superior to United’s and Arsenal are also ahead of us. If Liverpool squad gels then we will have a huge fight to break into the top four. Like it or not the Glazers have to dig deep and Van Gaal has to spend big or forget it.
