With Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal desperate to bolster his midfield ranks before the transfer window ends, there is likely to be some business in what has been an uninspiring off-season of deals at Old Trafford.
Arturo Vidal has been mooted as the top target for some time, but the Chilean’s rumoured move to England has stalled to the point that it looks unlikely that he will be swapping Juventus for United this summer, despite claims that a contract has been agreed with the 27-year-old’s representatives.
And now Khedira has emerged as an option, with the German World Cup winner available for a reduced fee.
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed earlier this week that the former Stuttgart ace could leave the Bernabeu before the looming transfer deadline, with his contract now in its last 12 months.
Offers of around £8m are rumoured to be viewed as suitable by Real, which has alerted United.
Arsenal have also been linked with the 27-year-old, but reports have suggested that a move from the Londoners may be unlikely.
The red Devils can match Khedira’s £150,000-per-week salary demands, but a lack of Champions League football may be a stumbling block.
