Manchester United launched their summer spending spree last week by capturing Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw for £60m, but despite such lavish spending for just two players Louis van Gaal’s use of the club’s chequebook is unlikely to stop anytime soon.

The Dutchman is said to have around £200m at his disposal for the coming months to rebuild the squad that failed so spectacularly under David Moyes last term, with a top four finish the very least he needs to achieve.

Arturo Vidal

Midfield general Vidal starred for Chile at the World Cup, and is said to be a long-term favourite of van Gaal. Juventus are understood to be ready to sell for around £40m, and the 27-year-old himself would consider United. No brainer then, surely?

Alexis Sanchez

Alongside his countryman Vidal, Sanchez has also used the World Cup to put himself firmly in the shop window. The silky attacker is said to be surplus to requirements at Barca with Luis Suarez on his way to the Camp Nou, but United will have to see off Liverpool and Arsenal to get him.

Arjen Robben

Robben seems to get quicker with age and is known to be one of van Gaal’s trusted stars in the Holland set-up. United have been linked heavily with the 30-year-old, who would surely link up well with Robin van Persie at Old Trafford.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Van Gaal is widely credited as the man who made Schweinsteiger the all-conquering player he is today when he moved him from a wide midfield position into the heart of the Bayern Munich team. Unlike Toni Kroos and a host of other Bavarian stars, the German is said to be open to a move to United, and he could well overhaul their midfield.

Mats Hummels

With Nemanja Vidic now gone, a new central defensive leader is needed at United. In an era where the old fashioned enforcer seems to have disappeared, Hummels is widely considered to be the best in the business.

Karim Benzema

With Radamel Falcao on his way to Real Madrid, Benzema may well be free to leave the Spanish capital. United have been linked with the Frenchman on numerous occasions in the past, and could re-visit him in the coming months.

Edinson Cavani

Cavani only joined PSG last year in a £50m+ deal, but it’s fair to say he hasn’t had the best of times in Paris. The Uruguayan is said to be ready to head off, and would even consider United despite their lack of Champions League football, apparently…

Memphis Depay

A number of stars from van Gaal’s Netherlands squad have been linked with United, with Depay on the list. The PSV Eindhoven winger is said to be available for around £17m, but Spurs also want him.

Bruno Martins Indi

Powerful, disciplined and a little bit scary, Matins Indi could be a good option for United as they plot to rebuild their defence, Van Gaal has made the centre-back a key member of his Holland team, which could tempt the player across to England from his homeland.

Angel di Maria

For some reason Real Madrid are considering letting di Maria leave. £30m-£40m may be enough for the classy attacker, making him a genuine option for United.

James Rodriguez

James – or Hamez depending on how you speak – Rodriguez has been one of the World Cup’s stars with his five goals in four games. United passed up the chance to sign him as a youngster in favour of Bebe (LOLZ), but could re-visit him this summer.
