It may be simply a coincidence, but Manchester United have scored some absolutely stunning goals against Sunderland throughout the Premier League era.

Indeed, ranging from long-range pile-drivers to purely iconic strikes, the Red Devils have a real knack of stunning their fans when the Black Cats come to town - or when they make the trip to the Stadium of Light.

Fortunately for United supporters, then, Jose Mourinho's side play hosts to Sunderland on Boxing Day,  hoping to make it four straight victories in the Premier League and mount a charge on the top four.

Meanwhile, David Moyes' boys travel to his former stomping ground aiming to claim back-to-back victories for only the second time this season. Sunderland have started a revival since mid-November as they look to avoid relegation once again.

Of course, we can't predict the future - but history suggests we'll see another gorgeous goal when the two sides meet at 3pm on Monday. Here are the five goals to prove it.

5. Robin Van Persie – 2013

During the 2012/2013 season, Robin Van Persie was instrumental in United's success over arch-rivals Manchester City and claimed a major scalp when the Red Devils overcame a regimented Sunderland side.

The Dutch striker's footwork, added with his dribbling ability and composure, was ultimately the difference between the two sides at the Stadium of Light.

4. Adnan Januzaj – 2013

Fast-forward six months from Van Persie's brilliance and United were suddenly a mid-table team struggling to adapt to life under now-Sunderland manager, David Moyes.

The under-fire Red Devils travelled to the North East hoping to claim all three points.

It took something special to separate the two sides, and young winger Adnan Januzaj's volley was the winning goal. Coincidentally, Januzaj is now on loan at the Stadium of Light.

3. Paul Scholes - 2001

Legend, icon, one of a kind; there aren't enough adjectives to describe Paul Scholes in the eyes of United fans.

When you look at this peach of a strike against Sunderland in 2001, it's not difficult to see why the midfielder was so highly regarded at Old Trafford.

25 yards out, Scholes managed to almost pass the ball into the roof of the Sunderland net.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo – 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo devastated Premier League defences on a weekly basis during his time at Manchester United and Sunderland fell victim in 2008.

On the verge of reaching the full extremities of his powers, the Portuguese winger bagged 42 goals across all competitions during the 2007/08 campaign, including this strike against the Black Cats.

That kind of free kick, with phenomenal power and dip, has since become one of CR7's trademarks.

1. Eric Cantona – 1996

Eric Cantona became a cult hero at United and moments of brilliance like this helped cement the eternal adoration of the Manchester United fan base.

The goal and the celebration have since become iconic, crowning 'King Cantona' and ensuring his place in the annals of the Premier League history.
