Manchester United may be English football’s most successful club, but it doesn’t mean they haven’t been prone to their fair share of player errors over the years.

Everyone makes mistakes, and goalkeepers' mishaps tend to get the most attention as, being the last line of defence, they often the most costly!

Current Man United number one David de Gea is considered to be one of the best stoppers in the Premier League – if not the world – but even the Spaniard dropped a bit of a clanger against Stoke City last month, gifting the Potters a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford when he could only parry the ball back into the danger zone.

And with the likes of the great Peter Schmeichel also producing some gaffes during his Red Devils career, it seems no-one is safe.

Here are FIVE of Manchester United’s greatest goalkeeping blunders…

Fabien Barthez x2 vs Arsenal (November 25, 2001)

One goalkeeping blunder in a game is always enough, but the Frenchman produced two errors as Arsenal secured a 3-1 win against United at Highbury.

With ten minutes left to play, the score was tied at 1-1 but Barthez’s poor clearance fell straight to Thierry Henry, who finished low past his France international team-mate.

Then just five minutes later, the same combination was repeated as Barthez fumbled a long ball forward into the penalty area, allowing Henry to capitalise and knock the ball into the empty net - there was probably some hairdryer treatment from Sir Alex in the dressing room afterwards!

Fabien Barthez vs West Ham (January 28, 2001)

West Ham hadn’t won at Old Trafford since 1986 when they travelled to face the Red Devils in an FA Cup tie in 2001, but Paolo Di Canio’s goal gave them a famous win, and made Barthez look a little silly.

When Freddie Kanoute slipped a ball through to Di Canio, the Italian played to the whistle and finished past the French stopper, who had his hand up appealing for an offside decision.

The flag was never raised though and United were knocked out of the famous competition.

Peter Schmeichel vs Barnsley (February 15, 1998)

After beating the Tykes 7-0 in the Premier League earlier in the season, Manchester United obviously thought they were in for a comfortable afternoon when they hosted Barnsley in the FA Cup.

The likes of Andy Cole, Gary Neville and David Beckham were left out of the starting line-up, and Sir Alex Ferguson paid the price for resting his players as the usually reliable Schmeichel gifted the visitors a goal before half-time.

Racing out of his goal, the Dane went to clear the ball but sliced it instead, allowing John Hendrie to run on to the ball and slide the ball into the empty net.

Roy Carroll vs Tottenham (January 4, 2005)

Even though the goal was never given, Carroll’s mistake against Spurs is still one of the worst goalkeeping blunders in Manchester United’s history.

Seeing the Northern Ireland stopper off his line, Pedro Mendes took aim from just inside the United half, but Carroll looked to have salvaged the situation as he went to catch the ball on the line, but he then fumbled the ball at least a yard over the line before punching it out.

Massimo Taibi vs Southampton (September 25, 1999)

MASSIMO TAIBI

Matthew Le Tissier was known for his stunning long-range goals during his career in the Premier League, but the former Southampton star wouldn’t have believed his eyes when he saw his shot cross the line at Old Trafford in 1999.

Under little pressure, Le Tissier took aim from around 25 yards but his daisy-cutter of a strike shouldn’t have troubled Taibi in the United goal at all, but the ball squirmed under the Italian stopper and drifted over the line.
