Manchester United star Patrice Evra has defended the club’s decision to hand Wayne Rooney a mega-money £300,000-per-week contract.

The England international put pen to paper on the sensational deal late last week, ending a long period of uncertainty surrounding his Old Trafford future.

Rooney was believed to be ready to quit United last summer to join Chelsea after being frozen out by previous manager Si Alex Ferguson.

But new chief David Moyes has made ‘Wazza’ a key member of his side, which appears to have eased his U-turn.

Naturally, the vast figures involved in the deal have led some to question the decision, with many suggesting that the Red Devils’ poor form led to them overpaying.

Rooney capped his big week with a thumping goal in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, and Evra believes that his team-mate is worth the outlay:

“He deserved to have a big contract,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.

“I’m so happy for him because he is working hard, and it is a good sign for the future of Manchester United, for the fans and for everyone.

“I’m really pleased with ‘Wazza’ because he deserves it. What a great finish it was, my cross was not easy to take, but it was a great volley.”
