Manchester United and Real Madrid are battling for the signature of AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo, after the former AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti stated his interest to take the player to Madrid, according to talkSPORT.
Montolivo has been heavily linked with both sides, but with Xabi Alonso’s current contract expiring next summer, Ancelotti is desperate to take the midfielder to the Bernabeu, and reports in Spain suggest that the Italian manager can get his man if the right offer is made – causing more woes for Manchester United manager David Moyes.
The defending Premier League champions have been criticised with the lack of signings they made in the summer, with Marouane Fellaini being the only major acquisition, and with 11 points from their first eight league games so far this season, Manchester United are already playing catch up with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham.
Montolivo, 28, has spent his entire club career in Italy, representing the likes Atalanta and Fiorentina before moving to AC Milan last summer on a free transfer, signing a four-year deal. He was made club captain after one season at the San Siro where he has scored four goals in 47 appearances.
